Bentley University Police Chief Ernie Leffler received the James Olivieri Award from the Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (MACLEA). The award, which recognizes Leffler’s exemplary commitment and distinguished service to MACLEA and to professional campus policing, was presented at the MACLEA annual meeting in December.

Among the many Bentley University courses that connect students with professional organizations is “Human Relations in Health Care” taught by Professor Helen Meldrum. Students in the class were asked to assist the American College of Physician Executives (ACPE) to help them better understand their members’ needs and how they can plan for the future environment of the healthcare industry.

When Bentley was awarded the $395,000 NEH challenge grant in 2011, it stipulated that Bentley raise matching funds in a three-to-one ratio by 2016, a five-and-a-half-year window. As of this writing, in less than three years, the university has nearly reached its goal of raising $1.185 million to support several Valente Center for Arts and Sciences programs.

Although higher education institutions have been under scrutiny regarding return on investment and adequate preparation for a successful life after graduation, Bentley’s 2013 graduates have good news to report: 98 percent of the responding class is employed or attending graduate school.

Business ethics issues are on the table as Bentley University students gather for the 17th annual Bentley Business Bowl (BBB) on February 22. Student teams will analyze cases that present ethical, business, accounting or auditing dilemmas.

As part of the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, Bentley University students are offering free tax return preparation for residents of Waltham, Mass., and surrounding communities through April 10, with the exception of Spring Break, March 8 to 16.

Bentley University has appointed Phillip Knutel as Chief Information Officer. The 15-year Bentley veteran will now serve as the principal technology leader, overseeing a $19M budget and more than 100 staff from seven IT units.
