W. Michael Hoffman $1,000 Scholarships in Business Ethics
Established in honor of the Hoffman Center’s founder and executive director, W. Michael Hoffman, two scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded annually to a Bentley undergraduate student and a Bentley graduate student who are judged to have written the best paper on business ethics.
Papers submitted for the Hoffman Prizes must demonstrate academic strength and must include a business ethics component. The prize committee takes a wide view of what counts as business ethics. A winning paper could address corporate social responsibility, corporate political activity, sustainability, organizational diversity and inclusion, conflicts of interest, ESG investing, social entrepreneurship, and much more. If you are wondering if your paper might qualify for the prize, ask us!
Submissions for the prize are judged according to the following four criteria:
- Significant Ethical Content: The paper demonstrates the writer’s understanding of and ability to apply relevant ethical frameworks and/or principles. The paper explores important ethical questions that occur in or have an impact on complex organizational settings.
- Depth of Analysis: The paper’s analysis of ethical issues should be considerable in depth, not settling for only a broad overview.
- Originality/Creativity of Analysis: The paper addresses the subject in a way that reflects original thinking. It goes beyond the mere application of existing theories, or it uses these theories in a creative way.
- Writing and Organization: The paper is well written and well-organized. The arguments are presented clearly and in a logical order. When appropriate, other literature is correctly used and cited.
Papers can be in the form of an essay, short story, case analysis, research paper, or any other type of written assignment. There is no minimum or maximum page limit. A student may submit more than one paper, and any paper written during the student’s Bentley undergraduate or graduate years can be submitted.
To be eligible for the prize, the applicants must be graduating in May 2024 (or walking, with no more than two classes to finish). If a paper is co-authored, at least one of the co-authors must be graduating (or walking) in May 2024.
